WHAT NOT TO DO If You Wish to Be Successful in Life: 14 Negative Thinking Habits to Let Go

I usually don’t focus on negative actions and present only positive actions instead.  However, one reader of my blogs expressed that they felt more motivated by knowing What Not What to Do.  So, this is my first blog where I outline:

“What Not to Do If You Wish to Be Successful in Life!”

(However, I can’t resist but to add what to do in my descriptions of each point)

If you believe in the theory of ‘alternate realities’, there is a likely version of yourself out there somewhere who is leading a better life than you are, even though they are… you!

They following attitudes are in your power alone, they are beliefs that you can choose to discard, like unloading accumulated burdens that you’ve been carrying for too many years.

  1. Let Go of Unhealthy Habits:  Every time you choose to eat something unhealthy or to sit passively rather than exercise, you are cheating your body from proper nourishment and your heart muscle from remaining strong rather than physically shrinking.

  2. Let Go of Being Too Small in Your Ambitions:  If one person can do something, you too can learn to achieve similar results by following in their footsteps; that is if you: stick to it, put in the work and take pride in your efforts with purpose and enough passion to keep you going, even when times are tough.

  3. Let Go of Difficult or Draining People:  Relationships require commitment, time, emotion and some degree of a give-and-take balance.  Sometimes we have a limited choice of those in our family or the colleagues we work with; however, there are many others in our life we choose to be around.  Choose those who are positive, supportive and not using your compassion and care to their constant advantage.  You can be an occasional crutch and support others, but you should not have to carry them on your shoulders.  Anyone who consistently criticises you or uses you is not your friend.

  4. Let Go of Excuses and Blame:  The only person who can get you what you want, is you.  You control only your attitudes, your actions and your reactions.  Everything else in the world can only be influenced by you.  There is nobody else to blame, and there is no point in blaming yourself as it will get you nowhere. “Some things are up to us, and some things are not up to us.”  Epictetus

  5. Let Go of Multi-tasking:  If you want better quality and your systems to last longer, focus on one thing at a time.  Multi-tasking brings more mistakes as too many jobs get done with less thought and consideration.

  6. Let Go of Perfectionism:  Everything physical in our world is flawed and imperfect.  Nothing physical lasts forever and everything is subject to constant change.  Energy may be permanent and perfect, but form is subject to decline.  In simple words, accept that things only need to be as good as the job they need to do, by no means are they expected to be perfect.

  7. Let Go of Saying YES to Everything Asked of You:  Every time you say yes to someone else, you sacrifice your time for someone else’s.  You have given your time to save the time of somebody else.  It is a choice that you need to weigh up and sometimes you have to say ‘No.’ If it isn’t pressing and you are not sure whether to commit, say to the person “Give me the time to think about that and I’ll get back to you when I’ve made a decision.”  Show that you are in control of your time.

  8.  Let Go of The Fixed Mindset:  A Fixed Mindset means that you have rules for how things should work out if one follows them.  This is not reality.  A Growth Mindset means learning from the pitfalls you encounter in life and on your journey by making mistakes.  Everyone makes mistakes and you are no exception.  Be flexible, not rigid, in how life plays out.

  9. Let Go of the Idea That There is a “Magic Formula”, and Suddenly You Will Achieve Success:  Things take effort and time, if you really want them.  If someone promises you instant wealth, success or happiness, remember “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.”

  10. Let Go of the Short-term Mindset:  Stop sacrificing your long-term achievements by choosing the temptation of short-term pleasure.  This encompasses your relationships, your money, your ambitions and your health.

  11. Let Go of Your Need to be Liked:  You do not need to justify yourself to others, nor continuously please others.  Independence comes from having your own opinions and leading your own life, not adapting to “fit in” with somebody else’s agenda, nor validating yourself by wanting the praise or acceptance of others.

  12. Let Go of Your Attachment to Physical Possessions: This is something I outline in many of my blogs. Whatever you own, you will have to spend time maintaining and cleaning whilst it takes up you physical space and maybe ties you down from enjoying more rewarding and exciting experiences in life with friends and family. Everything you own ties you down in one way or another.

  13. Let Go of Your Unquestioning Faith in Social Media, News and Advertising:  The following may sound like paranoia, but in the digital marketplace, you are considered a product and a potential target for being sold to.  Someone out there wants to make money from you to fill their own pockets.  They want you to believe in the illusion of the lifestyle they are selling and buy into their way of marketed life.  This is marketing, this is sales, this is news, and this is Politics.  Yes, there are social norms out there that keep us living a relatively safe, protected and structured life, but there’s also forces out to manipulate you into spending money or having control over you, shrouded behind other agendas.  You can’t control it, but you can manage the choices you make when presented with seductive advertising or enticing news stories.

  14. Let Go of Being Negative: You have a choice of whether you look for the positives in life or whether you focus on the negatives. It is obvious how this will affect your journey.
